Arani is a political sociologist whose research examines the intersections of digital media and diaspora, the political economy of media, and the politics of religion in contemporary India. He is currently working as a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Visual and Media Anthropology at the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS), Heidelberg University, Germany, and is on academic leave from his position at the School of Interwoven Arts and Sciences (SIAS), Krea University, India. In addition, Arani is a visiting researcher at the Institute for Asian and African Studies (IAAW), Humboldt University, Germany.
Arani is presently completing his monograph, Understanding Propaganda: A Study of Indian Media, forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan, Singapore in 2025. He received his doctoral degree as a Hanns-Seidel Fellow at the Institute for Asian and African Studies, Humboldt University of Berlin. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Media Studies, jointly awarded by the South Asian Media School, Lahore, and Goldsmiths, University of London.
